The Challenge is to read 12 books that have been gathering dust on any given surface around the house for more than a year, and to read them in the 12 months of 2018. Brilliant! Here’s my list in no particular order:
Ishmael’s Oranges by Claire Hajaj (July)
Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome (June)
The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood (February)
At Swim Two Boys by Jamie O’Neill (August)
The Collected Short Stories of Katherine Mansfield by Katherine Mansfield
The Running Sky by Tim Dee
A Voice Through A Cloud by Denton Welch (May)
Police At The Funeral by Margery Allingham (January)
The Way We Live Now by Anthony Trollope (April)
Dr. Zhivago by Boris Pasternak (November)
Farewell Leicester Square by Betty Miller (October)
A Farewell To Arms by Ernest Hemingway (March)
And two alternates, just in case:
Ladder of Years by Anne Tyler (July)
The Village in the Jungle by Leonard Woolf (September)
Oh, I do need to read Three Men in a Boat! Someday. At Swim, Two Boys is just gorgeous. I hope you love it (I need a re-read!). I really enjoy Hemingway, usually, and A Farewell to Arms is one of his best. I’ve had Dr. Zhivago on pretty much every “to read” list I’ve ever created…. but still haven’t read it. GAH. Looking forward to seeing what you think of all these. Good luck!

Thank you – I just bought At Swim, Two Boys because it sounded like At Swim Two Birds which I loved, so I’m glad it comes with a recommendation. Thank you also for organising this challenge!

Thank you! I read The Odyssey last year and was horrified by the ending and the treatment of the serving women – my daughter told me about The Penelopiad, how fantastic of Margaret Atwood to take up their cause, I’m really looking forward to it.

I loved ‘A Farewell to Arms’ and may reread that sometime in the near future. I’m embarrassed to say that I’ve yet to read Margaret Atwood, but plan on rectifying that in the next few weeks. Good luck with the challenge, you have a great site!
